Siin lähedal asus kunagi maa-alune Ülgase fosforiidikaevandus, mille kaevanduskäikudesse on seadnud end sisse üks Eesti suurimatest nahkhiirepopulatsioonidest. Kaldapealne osa on looduskaitseala. Eemal paistvatest metsadest saab alguse Tõrukese oja, mis voolab kevadeti ja sügiseti kärestikuna paekaldast alla mere suunas. Siin kaevanduse nooremas osas leidub kõige rohkem “nõiaringe” (vaata eemalt, ära puutu, osa neist võivad olla radioaktiivsed!).
Nearby, the underground Ülgase phosphorite mine once stood. Nowadays, one of Estonia’s largest bat populations has settled in the mine tunnel. The part above the bank is a nature reserve. From the distant forests, the Tõrukese stream starts, which flows rapidly down the limestone bank towards the sea in spring and autumn.
In the younger part of the mine, you can spot many “vicious circles” (look from a distance, don’t touch; some may be radioactive!).
