Osa mägesid kaevandusala välisserval koosnevad kokkulükatud pinnasest, kuid osa neist koosneb ka sügavalt maa seest pärit graptoargilliidist, mis sisaldab hapnikuga kokku puutudes isesüttivat gaasi. Need mäed “põlesid” peale nende kokkukuhjamist seestpoolt ja nende tipust kerkis kunagi suitsu nagu vulkaanidest.
Some of the hills on the outer edge of the mining area are composed of compacted soil. Still, some consist of graptolitic argillite from deep underground, which contains a gas that ignites spontaneously when exposed to oxygen. These hills have “burned” from the inside after they were piled up, and once the smoke has risen from their tops, just like from volcanoes.
