Old stone fences are excellent objects for studying rural culture. They are monuments to previous human generations’ hard work and building traditions. Where the land was rockier, there the fences were longer.
Stone fences also contribute to nature conservation because they create an environment for biological diversity: conditions for vegetation (e.g. moss, fern species), a place to live and shelter for small creatures (e.g. snakes, lizards, hedgehogs, toads, insects, etc.), as well as a nesting or feeding place for birds.
