Scents That Carry Memories
The first summer after we bought this farmstead, my partner and I rode a bike through the surrounding village roads. At one point, I asked him to stop and smell the air—it smelled exactly like my childhood. I had spent many summers at my grandmother’s farm, just 15 km from here, where the landscape and vegetation are much the same. He smiled and said his childhood smelled utterly different. He’s from Saaremaa, where the unique island flora gives the air its distinct bouquet.*
