Green Key

Sustainability is our core value

Our mission is to promote responsible tourism through purposeful actions that respect nature and support the local community, while delivering world-class hospitality.

By adhering to the Green Key criteria and continuously improving our practices, we aim to inspire our guests and partners to make more conscious choices and take greater responsibility for shaping a better living environment—one that benefits both human well-being and natural biodiversity. Here are some of our everyday practices.

Energy efficiency

We have installed energy-efficient LED lighting throughout the property and in all buildings. Our heating system utilises efficient ground-source heating and air-source heat pumps. Additionally, we have installed solar panels to generate some of our energy on-site.

To manage electricity and heating systems, we use various applications that monitor solar energy production and track electricity market prices.

Water protection

Taju sources its water from a local borehole, with groundwater safeguarded by an 80-meter-deep clay layer. The water undergoes annual testing for chemical and microbiological safety. Wastewater is treated on-site through biological systems and then infiltrated on the property. Additionally, we avoid using chemical herbicides and pesticides in the garden and green areas.

Our buildings feature water-saving devices, and during guests’ stay, towels and bed linens are changed, and interim cleaning is provided only upon request.

Waste reduction and recycling

At Taju, waste is categorised into four main groups for recycling: mixed packaging (which includes beverage cartons, clean plastics, glass, and metals), deposit bottles and cans, and organic waste. The organic waste is composted on-site, and some plant-based waste is repurposed as additional feed for our cattle. Cardboard and paper waste are either reused in gardening or used as fire starters, while some paper waste is sent to public recycling points. Taju does not provide single-use plastic items to guests; only reusable tableware is used at picnics.

Commitment to sustainable food.

At Taju, the restaurant Hiis has been recognised by both the 360°Eat Guide and the Michelin Guide for its commitment to sustainable gastronomy.

The restaurant’s seasonal menu primarily features foraged ingredients and locally sourced produce. Food waste is minimised through carefully planned supply orders based on confirmed reservations.

From late spring to autumn, Hiis uses salads and herbs grown in Taju’s garden, along with vegetables from Lähe Farm in a nearby village that practices ecological farming, composting, crop rotation, and natural pest control.

Currently, Hiis offers 15-course experiential dinners, Taju picnics, and breakfast for Dome Meadow guests. Vegan options are available upon request at the time of reservation.

Environmental protection and biodiversity

Since 2017, we have restored about 10 hectares of overgrown grasslands, woodlands, and coastal meadows that were once used for grazing and pasture on the old farmstead. Approximately six hectares of moist forest have been deliberately left undisturbed, as fallen, moss-covered, and decaying trees provide food and habitat for various species.

We minimise disturbance to local flora and fauna by directing guests away from protected plant areas and animal nesting and living sites. When planning maintenance for nature trails and green areas, we consider the breeding season calendar and weather conditions to ensure we preserve and enhance a beautiful coexistence with all living beings.

Locally, we have contributed to the development of the Rebala Heritage Landscape nature trails through volunteer efforts and investments in resources.
